Self Catering Holiday Vacation Rental Accommodation in Tarn, South West France, near Albi, Toulouse, Lavaur

Gaillac is located, on the north bank of the Tarn, 20 kms west of Albi and owes much of its original wealth to river boat trade and the many local vineyards.

With vines first planted by the Romans, Gaillac is one of the oldest wine-growing region in France. What did the Romans ever do for us, indeed!

In recent years, the wines of Gaillac have improved dramatically and there are many good vineyards to visit.

The Benedictine Abbey of St Michel overlooks the river and houses an excellent museum dedicated to the local river and wine trade. The Abbey also houses a cave that organizes regular wine tastings and where many of the best wines of the region can be purchased.

If you are looking for ways to keep the kids amused there are two train museums in Gaillac, one a super labour-of-love where the owner has spent years building a model railway, replicating many of the local towns, villages, countryside and of course train stations.
